Sam’s Story
I was born and spent the first 13 years in Hong Kong before moving to Sydney. As a 13 year old, it was both scary but exciting to move to Australia without my parents on my first year. I always say it is all part of character building and where my adventurous side started to flourish. My dad who still lives in Hong Kong is a professor in biomedical engineering, and mum was a school administrative staff who gave up her career to move here with my little brother, Tim. They are absolutely my inspiration. Growing up I see how hard my parents work to allow us to be so lucky to experience life the way we have. This has been a huge influence on me to not take things for granted, and to always keep experimenting, trying and learning new things for a fuller life.
Unlike many, I didn’t always want to be an exercise physiologist (EP) or physiotherapist, in fact I always thought I would either get into social work or architecture because I love relating and helping people and have always been creative. My dad sustained a pretty bad back injury, and the help that he had was quite suboptimal. This is where my interest in rehabilitation sparked – I absolutely fell in love with the idea of helping people get back to the things they enjoy. My education pathway saw me starting with Bachelor of Exercise Physiology to learn more about chronic disease management and exercise prescription, then followed by Doctor in Physiotherapy.
For a person who’s quite energetic, I am quite active throughout life (figured skate, hockey, gym, running etc), but my love for sports physiotherapy started when I was doing various sports training role and an internship with a professional AFL team during my degree (GWS Giants). I love the integration between sports performance, rehabilitation and psychology in getting athletes and people who live an active life back to the activities that mean the world to them. I completed a strength and conditioning internship after my physio degree because I wanted to experience the full picture from rehabilitation to performance, and want to be able to provide that to my clients.
The move to Gold Coast was not a hard decision because of the active population and the wonderful beaches, but I was just waiting for the right opportunity to come up.
The challenges in my life though may not be perceived as significant by others, have been difficult for me, and have pushed me to learn more about myself and how I can come out of it gaining something out of it. The main challenges have been losses that I have experienced, whether it is death of family members or long-term relationship falling apart; and life setbacks due to various sporting injuries. I have always reminded myself each discomfort and failure can turn into a learning lesson, and each time I feel anxious, it means I am close to yet another chance to grow.
