Dan’s story
I grew up on the Gold Coast where my first memories are of going to kindergarten here where I was apparently very shy, but I would chew my parents ears off once I got in the car to go home.
Upon my final year of kindy before commencing the 13 years of school, our family took a detour to live in Port Douglas at the end of 2005. These years living in Port Douglas would probably be my most cherished childhood memories as it was a great age being 5-8 years old to live in a small country town which involved mates living on the same street/bike riding distance from each other and hangout areas, finding my love for AFL and soaking up the tropical weather.
In 2009 our family decided to move back to the Gold Coast where I would do most of my growing up and find out a lot about myself. I continued to play AFL when we moved back down and would go on to play for the Broadbeach Cats for 8 years (2010-2017). Though I was not the most academic kid going around, I learnt and gained a lot of leadership skills being the captain of my team 4 out of the 8 years I was there. I was also blessed to play in 3 premiership sides, win 3 league best and fairest awards and be a part of the Suns academy.
While Playing AFL I took up strength and conditioning training at a young age of 12 in the off seasons. This taught me a lot about the Human body and how to train at an elite level. As I got older, my dream of playing AFL slipped away as I was not selected to go through to the next stage of the Suns academy and commitment to training diminished slowly. This led me to think more deeply about what I wanted to do for a career after school.
After school I gave in and went to university to study education in hopes to maybe become a sports/pe teacher, however I quickly realised this was not the way for me, and I remained loyal to my work at Woolworths, which I started at 15 years old.
I then see that a friend had just started a business at the EMF Performance Centre in sports remedial massage. I researched this pathway and saw there was potential to work with elite athletes and sports industries which seemed to be perfect for me, so I thought I would try.
The continuous learning of the human body, while at times was challenging, it was very interesting to me and enjoyed that aspect of the course. During my studies I also had the privilege to work with elite sports teams which included; Brisbane Roar, NZ Warriors, Perth Glory and Brisbane Lions AFLW. After working with the sports teams, I knew I was in the right industry and was not going to turn back.
